Wavertree Pottery makes functional stone- and slipware inspired by British studio pottery, the likes of Leach, Michael Cardew, and Ray Finch of Winchcombe Pottery*. The potter, Harry Bennett, comes from Worcestershire, West Midlands, where he was first taught pottery by Edward Turfrey, a former studio potter at Winchcombe, who himself learnt under Ray Finch.
Wavertree Pottery’s output is low-intervention, meaning there is no post-production other than decoration and glazing. Once taken off the wheel, the pot isn’t changed. Harry’s work is an extension of his love for landscape, aiming to feel born and of the earth.
*This is alongside other key inspirations, which include Lucie Rie, Worcester Porcelain, Medieval pottery and 17th-century British slipware. Rural Britain also plays a big role.
